UMRAH, TAWAAF OR CIRCUMAMBULATION AROUND KAABA

Tawaaf or circumambulation means circling around something. In Islam it means moving or circulating around Kaabah seven times with extreme devotion and love.

Preparation:

Pass the upper sheet of clothing Ihram from underneath the right arm and put it on left shoulder, the act bares the right shoulder. An ablution (wudu) is necessary for tawaaf. Recitation of Talbiyah is stopped when you reach Black stone or the Hajar-e-Aswad, the starting point of tawaaf.

Niyyah (Intention):

Stand in front of Kaabah facing the Hajar-e-Aswad (the Black Stone) in such a way that the entire Hajre-e-Aswad is on your right side. To attain this end, you can get help from the black stripe on the floor. The stripe should be on your right side. After that without raising your hands, make Niyyah (intention) for Umrah.

Istilam:

            Now move towards right and come in front of the Black stone

Hajar-e-Aswad and kiss it if possible, just touches or raises your hands and points the palms of your hands towards the Hajar-e-Aswad and kiss it. This act of kissing the Black stone i.e. Hajar-e-Aswad or pointing towards it is known as Istilam.

Tawaaf Starts:

After Istilam, turn to right and start doing tawaaf (circumambulation) counter clockwise.

Few warnings regarding tawaaf

* The authorities often apply perfume to the Black stone or

Hajar-e-Aswad, Multazam, Rukn Yamani. If so happen, do not touch them while being in the state of Ihram

* During tawaaf, it is not allowed to turn your back towards Kaabah except when you are pointing or kissing towards Hajar-e-Aswad.

Ramal:

            For the first three circuits of Tawaf (circumambulation) of Kaaba, men are required to walk with quick short steps. This act is called Ramal and also a Sunnah. They can walk normally during the remaining four circulations.

Rukn-e-Yamani and Supplications:

                   After passing through the three corners of the Kaabah you reach the fourth corner called as Rukn-e-Yamani. Touch it with using your right hand and supplicate

Seven circles:

              At Hajar-e-Aswad, start the second circle or circuit by kissing it or pointing towards it as you have started the first circuit.

1. Zamzam water:

               Now move towards Zamzam well situated in the basement of the Haram. There are separate portions for women and men. Zamzam water is the best available water in the whole world. Drink zamzam water to fill in standing position by saying Bismillah. Then make Dua (supplication) to ALLAH.

RULES FOR DOING TAWAAF (CIRCUMAMBULATION) OF UMRAH

1. A person should be in the state of Ihram before starting the Tawaaf.
2. There are three conditions necessary for Tawaf:
   1. A person should be a Muslim
   2. Niyyat (intention)
   3. To perform Tawaaf (circumambulation).

Without niyyat, Tawaaf is not valid.
