Ramadan

Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam which features the month of fasting. The name ‘Ramadan’ is mentioned in the Quran. ‘Ramadan’ is derived from Arabic words ‘امضه’ and ‘يرموضو’ means Burn. The name Ramadan refers to the burning of the sins from the day one in the month of Ramadan.

Importance of Ramadan lies in the fact that it is one of the five basic and prime pillars of Islam. Basically, Ramadan is not just about staying hungry from dawn to dusk, in fact, this month teaches the Muslims about self-restraint. Moreover, in Ramadan Muslims realize about the people who starve and do not have anything to eat and they are helpless. This makes them realize and develop a sense of compassion and cooperation for them. The month of Ramadan brings with itself numerous blessings and benefits for the Muslims. The obligatory order for fasting in the month of Ramadan is featured in Ramadan as;

“O! you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil.” (The Holy Quran, 2:183)

Abu Hurairah narrated that Prophet Mohammad ﷺ said;

Every action a son of Adam does shall be multiplied—a good action by ten times its value, up to 700 times. Allah says: With the exception of fasting, which belongs to Me, and I reward it accordingly. For, one abandons his desire and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for a fasting person: one when he breaks his fast, and the other when he meets his Lord, and the (bad) breath (of a fasting person) is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk. (Al-Bukhari)
