Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) real name was Abdul-Shams, he was born in Yemen. He accepted Islam through Tufayl ibn `Amr, he was the leader of his tribe and accepted Islam in Mecca. He entered into Islam so early than his associates. When Hazrat Tufayl (R.A) visited Mecca again, Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) accompanied him. That was the great honour and privilege of meeting the Prophet (PBUH). Our Beloved Prophet (PBUH) asked Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) that “What is your name? He replied Abdul-Shams than Prophet (PBUH) said “Instead of this name, let it be Abdur Rahman.”

When Prophet (PBUH) went for campaigning Khyber,

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) looked after the masjid. It was the habit of Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) to give leftover food to cats, because of this around the masjid number of cats increased. Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) loved to play with cats and he also takes care of them. Once Prophet (PBUH) saw Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) playing with cats, to which Prophet (PBUH) called him and gave him name Abu Huraira means “Father of cats”. Since then he preferred to be known as Abu Huraira (R.A).
Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) is famous and well known for compiling many “Ahadees”. Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) has reported about 5,000 Ahadees, which are mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih al-Muslim.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) narrates: I said “O Prophet of ALLAH, I hear the Holy Hadees from you but I forget them”. After hearing this Prophet (PBUH) directed me to stretch my sheet. I obeyed. The Prophet (PBUH) raised his blessed Hands and scooped something from the air and empty that into the sheet, Prophet (PBUH) then said to me to take it and grasp it to my chest, I did as Prophet (PBUH) said. Since then I never forgot anything. (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) mother was a Mushrik, he often urges her for accepting Islam but she always denied. Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) prayed for her to become a Muslim.

One day, Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) again invited his mother to accept Islam by believing in One God ALLAH and his Prophet (PBUH), but she responded with some bad words about the Prophet (PBUH). Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) went to the Prophet (PBUH) with tears in his eyes. Prophet (PBUH) asked to him “Why are you crying? Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) answered “I always invite my mother to accept Islam, and she all the time refused, I asked her today again, but she said some bad things about you that made me sad. Can you pray to ALLAH for her to turn to Islam?” The Prophet (PBUH) prayed for Abu Huraira’s mother to accept the holy religion Islam.

When Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) returned back to home, his mother said, “I declare that there is no God but only ALLAH and that Prophet (PBUH) is his Messenger.”

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) was true Muslim, his heart was full with desire to learn from the Messenger of ALLAH that is Prophet (PBUH), and this is the reason of becoming leading narrator of the Ahadees in the history of Islam. Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) at the age of 78 passed away in 59 AH and he buried in Jannatul Baqi.
